The Soldiers of the Falklands Islands defence force are made up of volunteers from the Islands. The unit is responsible for the defence of the Islands and providing in depth local knowledge of the Island terrain. They were formed in 1892 and funded by the Falklands Islands Government. The Defence force is recognised as a skilled and effective Territorial Army unit, not only forming an integral part of the Islands' defence operation, but also carrying out search and rescue operations.
