low recoil on M16/AR15's is not cause of the design, it's cause of the 5.56 round.
and the bolt acutally goes into the stock. the stock holds the recoil spring.
and i'd like to add that the M16 is an accurate rifle but definately not the best designed rifle. the gas directly sprays into the dirt sensitive bolt assembly... the M16 gas system gives it better accuracy, but it's bad for the reliability in more extreme conditions
