China to despatch helicopters to peacekeeping mission for first time

A Chinese military aviation unit consisting of four helicopters and 140 personnel will be deployed for peacekeeping duties in Sudan, state-run Xinhua news agency reported on 10 October.
Although China has sent many People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers on such operations since the country's first contribution to a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in 1992, this is the first time that helicopters will be despatched.
The PLA commenced shipping materials for its first peacekeeping helicopter unit from the port of Tianjin on 10 October, which should arrive in Port Sudan by mid-November, according to the media outlet.
By mid-January they will have been transferred to El Fasher, the capital of Sudan's North Darfur state, where the combined African Union and United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is headquartered.
