On August 7 2008, Georgian forces entered South Ossetia, which is situated on the border with Russia, in an attempt to bring the region under government control. On August 8, while the world media is to a large extent focused on the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Russian military forces retaliated by entering South Ossetia and launching a series of airstrikes against Georgian forces and civilian targets
